Educational Philosophy
Guided by principles of artistic excellence that span 73 years of growth, the Art Center's commitment to education and life–long learning directs and defines all of our programmatic efforts.
In order to provide the highest degree of accessibility for the community to engage in the creative process, we continually strive to perpetuate a teaching tradition that originated with the first studio art class in 1934.
Our studio art program stresses the creative process, aesthetic response, skill development and the acquisition of historical knowledge and critical thinking.
The Indianapolis Art Center provides multi–faceted curriculum from novice to advanced levels, and it extends maximum accessibility in a broad range of programs that strive to develop the individual's artistic interests and abilities.
The Art Center's teaching philosophy is guided by the educational principles evident in the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, Indiana State Standards and Discipline–Based Art Education methods. These principles, combined with our high level of compassion and appreciation for the artist process, provide the highest quality artistic instruction. In addition to our core curriculum, the outreach and inter–arts programming offers the widest scope of educational opportunities, which includes certificate programs, lecture series, field trips and many other education endeavors. As it has in past generations, our highest degree of dedication to our diverse community will continue to guide the Art Center for years to come.
