FREE DAY OF THE DEAD WORKSHOPS

The Indianapolis Art Center is pleased to partner with Indianapolis Marian County Public Libraries (IMCPL) and the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library in Zionsville to bring free workshops to libraries throughout and around Indianapolis. The workshops offer children and adults an opportunity to learn about the celebration through arts activities that explore Day of the Dead. Registration is required for participation at any of the workshops. Please contact the library where the workshop will be held to register today!

Workshop Descriptions

• Sugar Skulls:  Skulls are pre-made from sugar paste which has been pressed into molds. Students will learn about the importance of sugar skulls and their use during Day of the Dead. Pre-made skulls will be provided to students and then decorated by students with colored icing, metallic colored foils, buttons, feathers and so on. The activity can be enjoyed by all- ages 5 through adult.
  

• Skull Masks:  Participants will learn the importance of skulls and skeletons during the Day of the Dead celebration. Using a skull template, participants will add plaster gauze to create their mask. Once dry, the masks will be painted and can be worn to your favorite Day of the Dead celebration. Appropriate for ages 9 and up.
  

• Sculpey Bead Necklaces: Participants will learn how to create multiple shaped beads, including skull shaped beads, using Sculpey clay. The beads will be fired in class and added to a cord. Using symbols and photos associated with Day of the Dead, participants will be able to decorate bottlecaps which will then be added to the cord to create a dynamic multi-dimensional necklace. Appropriate for ages 8 through adult.
  

• Day of the Dead Banners: Students will learn the importance of an altar or ofrenda during Day of the Dead. Participants will create a 4 foot long banner using felt, skeleton templates, glitter, beads, ribbon and sequins. This festive banner will add a unique touch to any altar or shrine. Appropriate for ages 5 through adult.
