The Indianapolis Art Center is hosting a day of FREE art making workshops for veterans and active military members on Saturday, November 13. Make It Take it workshops will be available in glassblowing, ceramics, sculpture, wood, textiles, jewelry, printmaking, and painting! And new to Veterans Art Day this year, we even have a workshop that incorporates watercolor and yoga!

Veterans Art Day is a one-day event designed to honor and connect veterans through the fun and healing that comes from creating in a hands-on environment. Veterans and members of the Armed Forces who are active or retired, from any branch, of any rank, of any age are all welcome to participate in these workshops.

Studies suggest that engagement in art and creativity can have a transformative effect on veterans adjusting to life after service. Art has the power to heal and the power to build community, which is exactly what this day is all about! Our Veterans Art Day activities are intended to bring a community of peers together by giving them a creative space to learn new skills and meet new people. This day also gives the Art Center staff and organizers a chance to honor and show our gratitude to veterans for their immeasurable sacrifices and bravery.

On Veterans Art Day, we will also celebrate ArtTroop—a free bi-weekly program for veterans and active-duty members that meet from January-October. Traditionally, this day has marked the closing of the ArtTroop Exhibition. This year, the opening of their exhibition will coincide with Veterans Art Day. This will give attendees a chance to observe their work on display, meet the ArtTroopers, ask them questions about the program, and learn how to apply for the following year.

Now that I’m excited about the event, how do I register for Veterans Art Day?

Registration will close Tuesday, November 10 at 10 pm.

How many sessions do I get to sign up for?

2! You will sign-up for one in the morning, and one in the afternoon. Spots fill up
fast and class capacity is limited, so be sure to read the class descriptions carefully, decide which classes pique your interest, and then make that call!

How do I learn which workshops are being offered that day and what they entail?

Please see the links below (under Morning MITI and Afternoon MITI) for information specific to each workshop. You can click on the class name to see a description, instructor, class capacity, and studio location.

What about lunch – is it free?

Yes! We also try to include menu items for those with dietary
needs like vegetarian options and gluten-free!

How is the Art Center going to ensure our safety amid the rise in Covid cases?

Safety is our number one priority. We have limited class capacities in
each studio, so as to ensure that students can properly social distance as needed. Masks will also be required at all times this day unless you are outside and safely distanced from others. Additionally, we will be looking at best ways to serve lunch as we approach the date. This could mean hot lunch may still be possible, but we will work with the caterer to ensure plating is done so safely. We will also be looking into catered boxed lunches as a backup plan. Either way, attendees are free to spread out among our grounds during lunch.

As always, these plans are subject to change; at which point, those registered would be notified. We will be sure to continue to update this page as we learn more.

So what are the next steps now?

Read the class descriptions found below, make a call to guest services, get registered ASAP, tell your veteran friends, and come have fun with us! We can’t wait to see you all there!
