The Indianapolis Art Center is hosting a day of FREE art making workshops for veterans and active military women and men on Saturday, November 14 with workshops in glassblowing, ceramics, bookmaking, jewelry, and painting.

Veterans Art Day is designed to honor and connect veterans through the fun and healing that comes from creating in a hands-on environment. Veterans and members of the Armed Forces who are active or retired, from any branch, of any rank, of any age are all welcome to participate in these workshops.

Studies suggest that engagement in art and creativity can have a transformative effect on veterans adjusting to life after service. Art has the power to heal and the power to build community – and that is what this day is all about! Our Veterans Art Day activities are intended to offer a fun atmosphere for vets in a community of their peers, giving them a space to be creative and to learn a new skill. This day also gives the Art Center staff and organizers a chance to show gratitude to our vets for their immense sacrifices.

Traditionally, Veterans Art Day programming has comprised of two sessions of Make It Take It workshops, with classes offered in the morning and afternoon. This year, we will be trying out a new format with Make It Take Its in the morning and an afternoon of what we are calling “Make It Give Its”! This year has been marked by unprecedented hardships and challenges, and the impact on our communities has been great. However, this time has reminded us all of the importance of human connection and has likewise deepened our understanding what it means to be a community of strength. And it is for this reason that we wanted to create a space where we could come together and make art – art that can inspire change and support our neighbors. Whether it is making hats and blankets for those in need or tie dyeing masks for our Hoosier citizens, we want to Make It and Give It!

*Please note that as we continue to monitor COVID-19 in our communities, these plans are subject to change; at which point, all those registered would be notified. We will be sure to update all as we approach the date.
